There is no prescribed method you can use to start writing. The reasons why people choose to write vary from one writer to another.

For some writers, their intention is to inform, educate, entertain and to promote their businesses. While some writers simply want to write to have a voice.

Writing is not rocket science. If you’re serious about excelling in this field, all you need is to have a passion for writing. Then, the rest will follow.

You may want to invest in a course to polish up your writing skills. Courses with beginners writing exercises will help you decide the genre you want to specialise in.

Writing Help for Beginners In Writing Styles

Four writing styles form the umbrella under which all writing genres are grouped, including fiction and nonfiction writing.

  1. Expository writing style
  2. Descriptive writing style
  3. Narrative writing style
  4. Persuasive writing style.

ACADEMIC WRITING EXAMPLES

ACADEMIC WRITING

Academic writing covers topic selection, research planning, methodology, structuring and dissertation write-up.

WRITING HISTORY

WRITING FOR MONEY EXAMPLES

GETTING PAID FOR WRITING

If you choose to monetise your writing by selling your writing articles, studying the market you intend to write for is imperative.

Once you get equipped to write for specific markets it gets easy to sell your articles or your novel.

WRITING FOR THE WEB EXAMPLES

WRITING FOR THE WEB BEST PRACTICES

Skilful writers who write for the web have a strong grasp of how text communicateS with the audience. And are in a position  to write incredible content that’s readable, usable and accessible.

This helps to understand what type of content (information) your website visitors will be searching for. When you reach such a level, you will be able to write for the web (blog) effortlessly.

WRITING GENRES - EXAMPLES

WRITING A BOOK

Writing a book demands you to be cooperative and be on the lookout for advice from agents, publishers and best-selling authors. Its important that you liaise with all people that are going to help you become the writer you want to be.

Being a lone-ranger will not help because writing a book requires a hands-on approach to writing and editing. Finding the right publisher is key. A pinch of self-discipline is crucial for you to remain focused from start to finish.

WRITING SONGS

Writing songs, especially good ones, is a skill you can perfect through practice using the right techniques since there are various approaches to songwriting.

It’s not an easy thing either to come up with unforgettable melodies. To think of creative lyrics while you are writing songs doesn’t come easy.

If you want to excel writing in this genre, you must look for help from experts. From writers who have made it and now successful songwriters.

WRITING POETRY

To write good poetry, avoid the use of cliche, abstract words and sentimentality. However, making use of images, metaphors and similes is encouraged.

Though I should point out that the difference between writing a poem and a song is not very clear.

Having said that, lyrics must be kept shorter. Verses in a song are meant to evoke human emotions that relate to people’s experiences.

Whereas, a poem is based on emotions that an individual experiences in different situations, events and places.

Writing News Stories

Writing news covers a wide range of topics:

  • Interviewing
  • Observation
  • The community as context
  • Visual elements
  • About life

A news story must always have 3 main elements to it: an introduction, main body and the conclusion. Journalists will tell you what makes a good story are the 5 ‘W’s and the ‘H.’

Meaning, you must be specific when you write news stories and explain the 5 Ws.

  1. Why did the incident happen?
  2. Where exactly did it happen?
  3. When did it happen?
  4. What happened?
  5. Who was involved?

WHY IS HOUSE STYLE IMPORTANT?

Most organisations have their own in-house styles for writing. It can be a style manual for guiding writers in writing  publications. These are a set of standards every writer within that organisation has to adhere to.

A writing style guide allows the organisation to present its brand in a consistent way.

To scrawl is to write something carelessly. Also, it may imply to write something in a hurry such that it’s difficult to read. I guess scrawling is increasingly becoming common in this busy day and age we live. No one seems to have ample time to do the things they love doing.

If you have any questions about my online scrawl please feel free to leave them below. I will be more than happy to respond as soon as possible 🙂

It’s true, with all the writing courses and information out there, whether it’s a newspaper article, a blog post or a letter to a loved one – it all comes down to having a beginning, middle and an end.

It’s so simple, maybe too simple which is why we feel the need to make it more complicated when we don’t need to.

I would love to write full-time if possible as a freelance writer. I know it takes time to build up a reputation for yourself but it’s definitely something I’m working towards.
